Some people have the same job for their whole life. But John Kao is a man who likes to move from one job to another. He is now famous as a consultant and entrepreneur. But he is also an author and a doctor. For fourteen years he was a university lecturer at Harvard and he was also once a teenage rock star.

John Kao-s parents were from China, but he grew up in New York City in the 1950s and 1660s. For John it was a very interesting experinece. He once said, " At school i was in an American world. I was like a cultural astronaut." Kao did well at school, and at home he learnt the piano.

In 1969, when he was eighteen , Kao wrote to the rock star, Frank Zappa, and asked to join his band. Zappa listened to Kaos music and liked what he heard. So Kao moved to Los Angeles and played keyboards for for Zappas band , The Mothers of invention. It was fantastic experience , but Kao really wanted to go to university.

First , KAo Studied philisophy at Yale University ; then , he traines as a doctor at Harvard Medical School. But that wasn t enough. After that , he took a business course at the Harvard Business School. Kao soon knew that business was the subject for him . When he finished his course, he got a job as a university lecture in business.

For the next fourteen years , Kao taugh business at Harvard. But he was always interested in new ideas. One day , he met Steven Soderbergh , a young film diector. Soderbergh talked about his new film ans said that he needed money. Kao read Soderberghs script and saw a business opportunity. So he worked as Soderberghs producer. Together, they got the money and the film was a very big success; in fact, it won the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1989.

In 1986, Kao heard about some interesting research at the Harvard Medical School. A professor showed hi how he grew sheets of human skin in his laboratory. Because Kao was a doctor and also knew about business, he saw an opportunity. He took the professors idea and started a small bio-tech company.
"I did everything" said Kao . "I wrote the business plan, I got the money and i employed the managers."
Before long, Kaos small company was worth millions of dollars.
Over the next few years, Kao started more small companies. He also wrote a successful book about his ideas, called Jamming. When other businesspeople read his book, they come to him and asked for his advice. By 1996 kao was so busy that he stopped teaching at the Harvard Business School and started a company called Idea Factory.

Today, Idea Factory is a way for Kao to share his ideas and his advice with other businesspeople. It s also a way for him to make a very good profit.
