• О себе:I was born in East London, South Africa in September 1954 and am of Eurasian descent. Both my parents were born in South Africa in 1922 in the Eastern Cape, of Chinese fathers and European mothers. My grandfathers on both my mother’s and father’s sides were Chinese and came from Southern China. It appears they were quite adventurous and traveled to Mauritius in the 1890s. They worked on sugar cane fields there and later moved on to South Africa in search of work. They found work on the railroads which were being built whilst the country was slowly beginning to emerge. They met and married my grandmothers there who were French/Huguenot, Dutch and British extraction. South Africa has a chequered history – the Boer wars in 1899 between Britain and the two Boer republics. South Africa was colonized by both the Dutch and the British – the Dutch in 1652 and later the British in 1795. The French Huguenots arrived late 1600 early 1700. Today South Africa is not only home to the African people but on account of history and colonization, it is a colorful country or as it’s known today, the Rainbow Nation. I grew up during the apartheid area in South Africa and was happy to see the end of it in the early 1990s. Our family was not politically minded but all the same, there was discrimination if you were of a mixed race. Fortunately, we were not exposed much of the downside and lived a good life there until in early 1960 my father was promoted and got a company position in Mbabane, Swaziland, and the family followed.
